FIFA U20 Women’s World Cup: Nigeria vs Spain Preview

Nigeria will take on Spain in their first outing of the 2026 FIFA Women’s World Cup in Poland at the Arena Sosnowiec, Sosnowiec.
The Falconets will begin their campaign against one of the traditional powerhouse of the tournament, Spain. The is arguably the biggest game in Group F, while China and debutants, New Caledonia completes the group teams.
Nigeria has never won the U20 Women’s World Cup with their best outing coming as runners up in the 2010 and 2014 edition where they lost to Germany on both occasions (2-0 in 2010 and 1-0 in 2014) while appearing at every edition of the competition since inception.
Spain enter the tournament as one of the clear favorites to win after winning the 2022 edition by defeating Japan 3-1 in the final.
Nigeria and Spain have met twice at the FIFA U20 Women’s World with the Falconets winning 2-1 in 2016, while Spain got their pound of the flesh back by claiming 2-1 victory in 2018. Three goals were scored and conceded apiece in both encounters.
Coming into the encounter, the Nigeria side are beaming with confidence after displacing hosts, Poland 1-0 and playing a 1-1 draw with South Korea in friendly games.
The return of prolific striker, Janet Akekoromowei to the team after sustaining an injury in the Falconets 1-0 win against Senegal in the qualifiers in Abeokuta will further sustain the momentum and inspire the youngsters against one of the tournament’s favourites.
The pace of Mary Mamudu, Precious Oscar will be beneficial to the Falconets in nullifying opponents defense while midfield anchor, Kafayat Mafisere elegant passes, marking skills will counterbalance opposition midfield strength.
Spain’s technical quality, ball retention, movement, positional play and having players from top teams Barcelona, Real Madrid, Atlético Madrid, Juventus and Fiorentina will strengthen their options on the pitch of play.
Spain possesses a formidable history in the FIFA U20 Women’s World Cup. They won the competition in 2022, reached the final in 2018, and were eliminated by Japan in the quarter-finals in 2024. Their preparation has also been impressive. In their final warm-up game in Poland, Spain crushed Canada 5-2.
Spain boasts of an impressive attacking threats with the likes of Celia Segura, Alba Cerrato and Paula Comendador are capable of neutralizing opponents defense.
