The Lagos State Government plans to open three additional stations on the Blue Line rail service by the end of February 2027, expanding access to train transportation for more residents.

The new stations will be located in FESTAC, Alakija and Trade Fair. Their opening will increase the number of operational stations on the Blue Line from five to eight.

Abimbola Akinajo, Managing Director of the Lagos Metropolitan Area Transport Authority (LAMATA), announced the plan at the 2026 media parley organised by the state Ministry of Transportation.

According to LAMATA, the expansion will extend train services beyond the current Mile 2 terminus, making rail transportation more accessible to residents of the three communities.

The authority said the project would improve connectivity and provide commuters with an alternative to road transportation, which is often affected by heavy traffic across Lagos.

The Blue Line currently operates five stations: Marina, National Theatre, Iganmu, Alaba and Mile 2. The service began commercial operations in September 2023, connecting Marina with Mile 2.

LAMATA also disclosed that work on four Quality Bus Corridors was nearing completion. Construction of interchange hubs at Marina and Mile 2 had also made considerable progress.

The projects form part of the Lagos State Government’s wider plan to improve public transportation by connecting rail and bus services and easing pressure on the state’s busy roads.

When completed, the expansion is expected to give more residents access to mass transit and improve connections between communities along the Blue Line corridor.
