CAF Issues Ultimatum To Member Nations On AFCON Format Debate
By Saheed Afolabi
The Confederation of African Football (CAF) has approached its member associations, including the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF), to seek their positions on a possible change to the frequency of the Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON).
The continental football governing body has reportedly given the associations until Wednesday to submit their views on whether the tournament should continue to be staged every two years or move to a four-year cycle.
The consultation is part of ongoing discussions on the future format of Africa’s premier national team competition, although CAF has yet to announce any decision on the proposed change.
Initial indications suggest that some member associations may prefer to retain the existing biennial format rather than adopt a four-year schedule.
The feedback from the associations is expected to inform CAF’s deliberations as it considers the implications of either option for African football.
The current two-year format remains in place, with no official confirmation from CAF that the tournament’s scheduling will be altered.
