Traffic in Ikoyi: What Lagos’ Planned 6 Month Reconstruction Means for Residents

Traffic congestion around parts of Ikoyi has become a major concern for residents and commuters, particularly around the Parkview and Banana Island areas.

To address the problem, the Lagos State Government is planning to reconstruct 2 major intersections in the area, with the projects expected to be completed within 6 months.

What exactly is Lagos planning to do?

The government wants to redesign and reconstruct the affected intersections to improve traffic flow and reduce the bottlenecks that currently slow down movement.

One of the major concerns identified by residents is the 90 degree turn around the Parkview estate entrance and exit, which contributes to traffic build up.

The intervention will therefore focus on improving how vehicles enter, exit and move through the affected corridors.

Why is the project important?

The affected roads serve residents, businesses and other road users moving through Ikoyi, Parkview and Banana Island.

The government believes improving the intersections will make movement smoother and reduce the persistent congestion experienced in the area.

Will traffic stop during construction?

No.

The Lagos State Government says construction will be managed around existing traffic patterns. Work is expected to be slowed during peak periods and intensified during off peak hours to reduce disruption to commuters.

This means residents should expect some level of inconvenience while construction is ongoing, but the government intends to keep the roads functional.

Why has construction not started yet?

The government is still dealing with some administrative and technical issues before full construction begins.

One major concern is underground infrastructure. Fibre optic cables, water pipelines, electricity installations and other utilities around the project areas must first be identified and properly mapped.

The government says this is necessary to prevent the construction from damaging existing infrastructure and creating additional problems for residents.

Who is handling the project?

Construction is being handled by Julius Berger, while the Lagos State Government is working with residents’ associations, traffic managers, utility providers, telecommunications companies and other stakeholders.

When will residents see the project?

The government has said the project is expected to be completed within 6 months and indicated that residents should begin to see construction activity before December.

For residents who have spent months raising concerns about traffic in the area, the reconstruction represents an attempt by the state government to address one of the major transportation challenges affecting the Ikoyi axis.
