Lagos Traffic Is a Lifestyle, Says Hamzat

Lagos State Deputy Governor, Dr Obafemi Hamzat, has described the state’s notorious traffic situation as more than a transportation challenge, saying it has become part of everyday life for Lagos residents.
Hamzat made the remark on Friday while speaking at the 2026 edition of PodFest Naija, a storytelling and podcast festival held at Harbour Point, Victoria Island, Lagos.
The Deputy Governor said Lagos had long been described through stories about traffic, crowds and chaos, noting that while some of those descriptions may be accurate, traffic had also become intertwined with the city’s culture and daily routines.
“Not long ago, the story of Lagos was often told by other people; it was told in headlines about traffic, crowds and chaos. Some of those stories are not entirely wrong,” Hamzat said.
He added, “Anyone who has crossed Third Mainland Bridge at 6 p.m. knows that Lagos traffic is not a problem; it’s just a lifestyle.”
Hamzat also drew a connection between the city’s traffic and its growing creative industry, suggesting that many Lagos residents consume entertainment while stuck in traffic.
“I suspect that many of us in this room produce things that are consumed episode by episode between Ojota and Obalende. In a way, traffic has been the patron of your industry,” he said.
“So, you must celebrate traffic, that’s why we’re Lagos.”
His remarks came during a festival focused on creativity, technology, culture and storytelling, bringing together podcasters, content creators, brands and other players in Nigeria’s creative economy.
PodFest Naija, organised by The Muvmnt Studio, is designed as a platform for storytellers and creators to connect, collaborate, learn and explore opportunities within the creative economy. The 2026 edition featured themed stages covering areas including culture, technology, money, health, brands and civic issues.
