Nigerian singer Adewale Mayowa Emmanuel, popularly known as Mayorkun, has recalled how Afrobeats star Davido eventually signed him after going silent for two weeks, saying the breakthrough came moments after he led a praise and worship session in church.

Mayorkun shared the experience during a recent episode of the Afropolitan podcast, explaining that he had quit his banking job after Davido promised to sign him.

According to the singer, Davido had discovered him after watching a video of him singing online. However, after the initial promise, the singer said Davido stopped responding to his messages for two weeks, leaving him worried about his future.

Mayorkun said the uncertainty pushed him to seek spiritual support, prompting him to start attending church and trusting God for a breakthrough.

He recalled that on one occasion, shortly after leading a praise and worship session, he received a WhatsApp message from Davido asking him to pack his belongings and move into his house.

“Davido stopped replying to me for two weeks after I quit my banking job. I started going to church, and one day, immediately after singing praise and worship, he texted me on WhatsApp to pack my luggage and come to his house. It was more than a testimony,” he said.

The singer said the timing of the message left a lasting impression on him because he had not even returned to his seat after leading the session when the message arrived.

“You may not believe me, but I haven’t even returned to my seat after leading the praise and worship before he messaged. I was on my way to my seat. Before then, I was in panic because I wasn’t sure whether Davido would talk to me again,” he added.

Mayorkun rose to prominence after joining Davido’s record label, Davido Music Worldwide (DMW), in 2016. His association with the label helped launch his career in the Nigerian music industry.
