A teenager identified simply as Chike has been shot dead by suspected cultists in the Ikotun area of Lagos State after travelling from Delta State to visit a friend.

The incident, which occurred on Sunday, has left residents in shock and raised fresh concerns about insecurity in the area.

According to eyewitness accounts, the victim had stepped out with his friend to withdraw money from a Point-of-Sale (PoS) operator when they were confronted by a group of young men.

An eyewitness, Abiodun, said the attackers briefly engaged the duo before one of them suddenly opened fire at close range. “They stopped them and spoke for a short moment, then one of the boys just shot him. He died instantly, and they ran away,” he said.

The victim’s friend was not harmed, but the shooting caused panic as residents fled for safety.

Further claims from an anti-cultism advocacy platform suggest the attack may be cult-related. The group alleged that the assailants demanded valuables from the victim before shooting him, even after he reportedly attempted to hand over cash and personal belongings.

The victim, also known as “Ejanla,” was said to be based in Asaba and had only recently arrived in Ikotun to visit his friend.

As of the time of filing this report, the Lagos State Police Command has not issued an official statement, as efforts to reach its spokesperson were unsuccessful.
