NUJ Decorates Agege Chairman Obasa as Media Games Ambassador

The Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ), Lagos State Council, has decorated the Chairman of Agege Local Government, Abdul-Ganiyu Obasa, as its Media Games Ambassador ahead of the 2026 NUJ Media Games scheduled to hold from October 5 to October 10 at the Agege Stadium in Lagos.

Presenting the honour, Chairman of the NUJ Lagos State Council, Adeleye Ajayi, said Obasa was selected in recognition of his leadership and contributions to grassroots development, particularly in the area of sports.

Ajayi said the council chairman had distinguished himself through people-centred policies, strategic investments in community infrastructure and initiatives aimed at improving the welfare of residents.

He noted that Obasa’s commitment to grassroots sports development has created opportunities for youth engagement, talent discovery, healthy living and social cohesion.

“One of the hallmarks of your leadership is your strong commitment to grassroots sports development. Through deliberate investments in sporting infrastructure and youth-focused initiatives, you have demonstrated that sustainable community development begins with empowering young people and providing them with opportunities to excel,” Ajayi said.

According to him, the recognition is reserved for individuals whose contributions to sports development and community advancement align with the vision of the NUJ Media Games.

Responding, Obasa expressed appreciation to the union for the recognition, describing journalists as critical partners in promoting accountability and showcasing government activities.

“I feel very excited and honoured to be recognised for the work we have continued to do. I want to thank journalists for the great work they are doing in the country. Without journalists, the volume of work we do would not be known or visible to the public,” he said.

The council chairman reaffirmed his administration’s commitment to using sports as a tool for youth empowerment and economic development, noting that sporting activities provide employment opportunities and contribute to national growth.

He said the local government had sustained youth-focused initiatives through programmes such as the Obasa Games and the Obasa Summer Games over the past four years to keep young people positively engaged.

Obasa also pledged the support of the local government for the 2026 NUJ Media Games, assuring the organisers that the Agege Stadium would be made available for the competition.

He further announced that the council would inaugurate its maiden Lagos Mini Football League on July 31, describing it as the first competition of its kind in the state.

The event featured the presentation of a customised NUJ Media Games jersey and face cap to Obasa by the NUJ chairman and members of the Lagos State Council.
