NANS Demands Justice for UniJos Student Allegedly Beaten to Death Over Missing iPhone
The National Association of Nigerian Students (NANS) has condemned the alleged mob killing of Ibrahim Mbaye, an undergraduate of the University of Jos (UniJos), who reportedly died after being assaulted over allegations of stealing an iPhone.
In a statement issued on Monday, NANS National President, Akinteye Babatunde, described the incident as a “cruel and senseless” act, stressing that no accusation justifies jungle justice or extrajudicial punishment.
According to Babatunde, Mbaye was allegedly beaten, publicly humiliated and locked in a room by a group of individuals after he was accused of stealing an iPhone. He noted that the missing phone was reportedly never recovered from the student.
“It is deeply heartbreaking that a promising young student had to lose his life in such a manner. No allegation, regardless of its nature, justifies mob violence,” the NANS president said.
Babatunde extended condolences to Mbaye’s family, friends and the University of Jos community, while calling on law enforcement agencies to carry out a thorough and transparent investigation into the incident.
He also urged the authorities to ensure that everyone involved in the alleged assault is brought to justice, warning that failure to prosecute offenders could encourage further acts of mob violence on campuses and across the country.
Meanwhile, the Plateau State Police Command has confirmed the arrest of three suspects in connection with the fatal assault and said investigations are ongoing.
