UNILAG Withdraws Controversial Sexual Harassment Advisory After Public Backlash
University of Lagos has withdrawn a controversial sexual harassment advisory targeted at female students following widespread criticism, saying the publication does not reflect the institution’s values and reaffirming its zero-tolerance policy on sexual harassment.
The university disclosed this in a statement issued on Monday by the Head of its Communication Unit, Adejoke Alaga-Ibraheem, after a roll-up banner produced by the Student Affairs Division sparked outrage on social media.
The advisory had urged female students to adopt precautionary measures such as avoiding handshakes with men, not “dressing to kill,” and not mingling carelessly with men as ways of preventing sexual harassment and rape.
Other suggestions on the banner included advising students not to accept gifts from men, avoid staying alone with a man in a secluded place, and refrain from watching pornographic content.
The publication drew widespread criticism from members of the public, with many accusing the institution of promoting victim-blaming by placing the responsibility for preventing sexual harassment on potential victims rather than perpetrators.
Responding to the backlash, the university management acknowledged the concerns raised by the public and confirmed that the publication had been withdrawn.
UNILAG stressed that the advisory did not represent the institution’s position on sexual harassment and reiterated its commitment to providing a safe, respectful and inclusive environment for students and staff.
The university also reaffirmed its zero-tolerance stance on sexual harassment, pledging to continue promoting policies and initiatives that protect members of its community from all forms of abuse.
