Five men have died in a fatal road crash involving a Toyota Camry and an Iveco truck along the Lagos-Badagry Expressway.

The accident occurred in the early hours of Saturday near Sawmill, around Mowo Bus Stop, Lagos.

The vehicles involved were a Toyota Camry with registration number FKJ 630KS and an Iveco truck marked T28081 LA.

The Permanent Secretary of the Lagos State Emergency Management Agency (LASEMA), Dr Olufemi Oke-Osanyintolu, said the agency received a distress call about the crash at approximately 5:16am.

According to him, LASEMA immediately deployed its Dolphin Team from the Igando Base to the scene, where responders found that the two vehicles had collided head-on.

Preliminary investigations indicated that excessive speed and reckless driving by the driver of the Toyota Camry may have contributed to the crash.

Oke-Osanyintolu said the driver reportedly lost control of the vehicle, crossed into the opposite lane and collided with the approaching Iveco truck.

“Regrettably, the impact of the collision resulted in the death of five adult males who were occupants of the Toyota Camry,” he said.

Emergency responders recovered the bodies and handed them over to officials of the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) for further action.

The rescue operation involved LASEMA, the Lagos State Fire and Rescue Service, LASTMA, FRSC and personnel of the Nigeria Police Force from the Morogbo Division.

Two tow trucks were also deployed to remove the damaged vehicles and prevent further obstruction of traffic.

LASEMA said the recovery operation was completed successfully, with the vehicles taken to Morogbo Police Division, while the affected section of the expressway was cleared and reopened to traffic.

Oke-Osanyintolu expressed condolences to the families of the deceased and urged motorists to exercise caution, particularly during periods of poor visibility.

He warned drivers against speeding, dangerous overtaking and other reckless practices, stressing that road safety remains a shared responsibility.
