NAFDAC Records 225 Counterfeit Product Complaints In August As Agency Intensifies Crackdown

The National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control (NAFDAC) received 225 complaints concerning suspected counterfeit products in August, the agency’s Director-General, Prof. Mojisola Adeyeye, disclosed on Monday.

Speaking at a media briefing in Lagos, Adeyeye outlined the agency’s ongoing efforts to detect, investigate and remove suspected counterfeit, adulterated and unsafe products from circulation across the country. The figure underscores the persistent challenge of fake goods infiltrating markets and the urgency of sustained regulatory action.

Counterfeit products pose a direct and serious threat to public health. Fake medicines may contain no active ingredients, incorrect dosages or toxic substances, leading to treatment failure, drug resistance, severe adverse reactions or death. Substandard cosmetics, food items and other regulated products can cause poisoning, skin damage, organ failure and long-term health complications. Consumers who unknowingly use these items often discover the danger only after irreversible harm has occurred.

By receiving and acting on such complaints, NAFDAC aims to interrupt the supply chain of dangerous goods before they reach more households. The agency continues to urge the public to report suspicious products promptly and to purchase regulated items only from verified sources.

Adeyeye reaffirmed NAFDAC’s commitment to protecting Nigerian consumers through vigilance, enforcement and public education, stressing that the fight against counterfeits remains critical to safeguarding lives.
