Ikorodu Couple Confronts Police Over Alleged Extortion, Forces Release of Two Keke Passengers

A routine journey in a commercial tricycle, popularly known as keke, reportedly turned into a heated confrontation between a couple and police officers in the Ikorodu area of Lagos State after the officers allegedly detained passengers following a search.

According to an account of the incident, police officers stopped a keke carrying three young men and ordered them to disembark for questioning and a search.

The passengers were reportedly searched physically, but no incriminating item was allegedly found. The officers then demanded access to the youths’ mobile phones and began checking their contents.

One of the young men, whose father is reportedly a senior police officer, contacted his parents after the situation escalated.

The parents soon arrived at the scene and reportedly found that their son had been spared from being taken away, while the other two passengers had already been placed inside a police operational vehicle.

The officers allegedly told the couple they could take their son home while the other two remained in custody.
However, the mother reportedly refused to accept the arrangement.

She challenged the officers to explain why the two other youths were being detained when, according to the account, no illicit items had been found on any of the passengers.

“You can’t take them! These two boys are not going anywhere. You have to release them immediately,” she reportedly told the officers.

The confrontation reportedly continued for several minutes before the officers eventually released the two remaining youths.

The incident has sparked renewed concerns among residents about alleged harassment, unlawful searches, phone checks and extortion during police stop-and-search operations.
