Sanitation Drive Hits 90% Compliance As Council Boss Leads Monitoring Across Apapa-Iganmu LCDA
Arrests, Pardons 18 Violators
The executive chairman of Apapa Iganmu LCDA, Jimoh Olawale Saliu, on Saturday led a comprehensive monitoring exercise across the council’s seven wards in line with the reintroduced monthly environmental sanitation directive in Lagos State.
The exercise, which commenced at about 7:00 a.m. from the council secretariat, saw the chairman, accompanied by members of the executive and political appointees, tour key locations including Marine Beach and the Wharf Road bridge axis. At these spots, blocked gutters were inspected, and residents—particularly commercial motorcycle riders—were advised to maintain proper hygiene. Waste bags were also distributed to support compliance.
At the AP Tank Farm bridge area, traders were cautioned against environmental abuse and urged to keep their surroundings clean.
The monitoring team also visited Sari Iganmu, inspecting the fruit market along the Lagos-Badagry Expressway, the refuse-clogged Adeleye canal, and adjoining streets including Makanjuola and Adisatu.
A major concern was observed along Sari Road, where a blocked drainage at the Ladipo Primary School junction was identified.
The team further proceeded to Badia community, where Private Sector Participation (PSP) operators were at Akorede junction, actively evacuating waste.
At the bridge linking Ward “C” and Ward “E”, along the Fadaini road, beside old water corporation yard, Hon. Jimoh expressed concern over the filth in the area and instructed that residents are served abatement notice.
Speaking with journalists after the exercise, Saliu commended residents for their cooperation, noting a compliance rate of about 90 percent.
He revealed that prior sensitisation campaigns, along with the provision of waste bags and compactors across all seven wards, contributed significantly to the success.
Addressing sanitation challenges, the chairman disclosed that notices would be issued to residents responsible for blocked drainage along Sari Road, while clearance operations are scheduled for next week.
He emphasised that the sanitation initiative is critical to restoring environmental dignity and promoting healthy living conditions.
Saliu also urged residents who failed to participate to comply in future exercises.
Meanwhile, 18 individuals were arrested during the exercise for violations, but were later pardoned after identifying themselves as travellers unaware of the reinstated sanitation policy.
