By Saheed Afolabi
After an intriguing opening day matches of the 2026 Nigeria Women Football League (NWFL) Championship in Calabar, the race for survival tightens up with significant matchday two games.
The race for qualification intensifies as the 16 clubs hit the battle ground for their consequential matches to determine their fates in the rigorous playoffs.
With only group winners advancing to the promotion playoffs and the bottom sides staring at relegation to the Nationwide League, every point carries massive weight following an eventful opening round.
Eight crucial fixtures will unfold at the U.J. Esuene Stadium and Saint Patrick Stadium. Early frontrunners will look to pull away, while others fight to kickstart their campaigns.
Group A
Rosaria Victrix vs Delta Babes
Rosaria Victrix will be hoping to rekindle their hopes for survival in the NWFL Championship as they face Delta Babes at the U.J. Esuene Stadium in Calabar.
Delta Babes coming out of an impressive winning start to life will be focusing on extending their accumulated points.
First Mahi Babes vs DreamStar Ladies
DreamStar Ladies have a golden chance to tighten their grip on Group A when they face First Mahi Babes. The Lagos side made a bold statement with a 3-1 victory over Rosaria Victrix and know that maximum points would position them strongly for a return to the Premiership.
First Mahi Babes must bounce back quickly from their narrow loss to Delta Babes to stay in the promotion hunt.
Group B
Gallant Queens vs Pelican Stars
Hosts Pelican Stars will look to build on their winning start against Gallant Queens in one of Group B’s most intriguing clashes. Supported by passionate home fans, Pelican Stars edged past Ikukuoma Queens on opening day, and another victory would significantly boost their promotion ambitions.
Gallant Queens, who earned a hard-fought draw against Moje Queens, understand that a win here could dramatically alter the group dynamics.
Ikukuoma Queens vs Moje Queens
Both teams are still hunting their first win of the season.
Ikukuoma Queens went down narrowly to Pelican Stars, while Moje Queens shared the spoils with Gallant Queens. In a tightly contested group, securing that maiden victory could provide vital momentum for both promotion hopes and survival.
Group C
Wazbak International Sports Academy vs Rangers Women FC
Group leaders Wazbak Queens aim to keep their perfect record intact against Rangers Women FC. The Lagos outfit thrilled with a 3-2 win over Fortress Ladies and know another success would bring them to the brink of the promotion playoffs.
Rangers Women FC, who were held to a draw by Unification FC, will view this as an opportunity to open up the group standings.
Unification FC vs Fortress Ladies
Both sides are desperate for their first win.
Unification FC started with a draw and could climb into serious contention with three points, while Fortress Ladies will seek to convert their attacking promise shown in a five-goal thriller against Wazbak into a positive result. Their experience in recent Championship seasons could prove key.
Group D
Chosen Generation Angels vs Ghetto Tigers
A fiery South-West derby awaits as Chosen Generation Angels and Ghetto Tigers renew their rivalry.
Chosen Generation Angels need to recover from a disappointing 3-0 defeat to Imo Striker Queens, while Lagos-based Ghetto Tigers know a strong result could solidify their playoff credentials. With goal difference expected to play a major role later, both teams will chase a convincing victory.
Kwara Ladies vs Imo Striker Queens
Imo Striker Queens will aim to make it two wins from two when they face Kwara Ladies. The Owerri club announced themselves as serious contenders with a dominant 3-0 opening victory and another win would put them firmly in control of Group D.
Kwara Ladies, however, are in desperate need of a turnaround. They are winless in their last four Championship matches (dating back to the 2024 edition), with their most recent success coming against Honey Badgers. Against one of the early favourites, they will need a vastly improved performance to revive their promotion hopes.
