What began as another routine journey on a Lagos roadway ended in tragedy when a truck driver lost his life and his assistant narrowly escaped death following a lone accident along the Isheri Elemu–Ijegun corridor of the state.

The fatal incident, which involved a 40-foot containerized articulated truck, occurred on a busy stretch of road where residents and commuters were later greeted by the sight of the overturned vehicle and a major emergency response operation.

According to the Lagos State Traffic Management Authority (LASTMA), the truck driver died instantly after becoming trapped beneath the wreckage when the vehicle lost stability and overturned.

His motor boy, who was travelling with him, survived the crash but sustained multiple injuries and fractures. He was rescued alive from the scene and immediately transported to a nearby medical facility for urgent treatment.

For emergency responders, every second counted.

Officials said the articulated truck, although empty at the time of the incident, suddenly became unstable while in motion before overturning, resulting in the devastating crash.

As news of the accident spread, operatives of LASTMA’s Rescue and Recovery Unit quickly mobilized to the scene.

The rescue operation proved challenging as emergency personnel worked to access the victims trapped within the wreckage.

While the driver could not be saved, responders successfully extricated his body and ensured the injured motor boy received immediate medical attention.

Beyond the rescue effort, traffic officials moved swiftly to prevent the situation from escalating into a larger disaster.

LASTMA personnel secured the accident corridor, implemented traffic diversion measures and coordinated emergency activities aimed at protecting other motorists from secondary collisions.

The intervention helped maintain order along the affected route while recovery operations continued.

Officers of the Isheri Osun Police Division also provided security support throughout the exercise, assisting with crowd control and ensuring emergency teams could carry out their duties without disruption.

To restore normal movement along the road, authorities deployed a heavy-duty crane and a flatbed recovery truck to remove the overturned vehicle and clear the wreckage from the roadway.

The accident once again highlights the risks associated with heavy-duty vehicles operating on busy urban roads and the devastating consequences that can result when mechanical or operational failures occur.

Reacting to the tragedy, the General Manager of LASTMA, Mr. Bakare-Oki Olalekan, expressed sadness over the loss of the driver and extended condolences to the deceased’s family.

He also wished the injured motor boy a speedy recovery as he continues to receive treatment.

According to the LASTMA boss, incidents involving articulated trucks underscore the importance of routine vehicle inspections and strict adherence to safety standards.

He stressed that critical components such as braking systems, steering mechanisms, tyres, suspension systems and other mechanical parts must undergo regular professional maintenance and assessment to ensure vehicles remain roadworthy.

Bakare-Oki further called on transport companies, fleet operators, truck owners and drivers to place greater emphasis on preventive maintenance and compliance with road safety regulations.

He noted that many road crashes involving heavy-duty vehicles could be avoided through timely mechanical checks and responsible operational practices.

For the family of the deceased driver, however, the tragedy is more than another traffic statistic.

It is the sudden loss of a loved one who left home for work but never returned.

As authorities continue to advocate for safer roads and stricter maintenance culture, the incident serves as another painful reminder of the human cost of road accidents and the urgent need for collective commitment to transportation safety across Lagos and beyond.
