Lagos Seals Pinnock Beach Estate Over Sewage Pollution
The enforcement exercise, led by the Lagos State Wastewater Management Office (LSWMO), swept through parts of Lekki, Ajah and Surulere, targeting estates and buildings alleged to be contributing to environmental pollution and sanitation risks across the city.
Authorities said Pinnock Beach Estate in Osapa London, was shut after investigations reportedly uncovered the direct release of untreated wastewater into a nearby canal. Officials warned that the practice posed serious threats to residents, marine life and the surrounding ecosystem, while also creating offensive odours in the community.
In Surulere, a property on Amodu Street in Itire was also sealed following repeated complaints from residents over the dumping of raw sewage into public drains and neighbouring compounds. Environmental officials described the situation as a dangerous public health concern capable of increasing the spread of infections and sanitation-related diseases.
The operation further extended to Mashy Hill Estate in Ajah and Vintage Heights Estate in Elegushi, Lekki, where authorities alleged that untreated wastewater was being channelled into drainage networks, contributing to pollution and blockage of waterways.
Commissioner for the Environment and Water Resources, Tokunbo Wahab, said the affected properties had previously received warnings and abatement notices before the government moved in with enforcement actions.
He stressed that the state would continue to enforce environmental laws strictly, warning estate developers, facility managers and residents against illegal sewage disposal practices.
According to the government, the crackdown forms part of broader efforts to improve sanitation, protect public health and reduce environmental degradation and flooding across Lagos.
