Former Nigerian international Joseph Dosu has expressed satisfaction with his team’s performance despite a 2-1 defeat to FC Barbington in the opening match of the Lagos Ex-internationals Cup.

The match, played at the Mobolaji Johnson Arena (popularly known as Onikan Stadium), saw FC Barbington who adopted Ikorodu City FC for the competition edge past FC Dosu in a tightly contested encounter.

The tournament, organised by the Lagos State Football Association (LSFA) and sponsored by Bet9ja Foundation, kicked off with 32 ex-internationals, each adopting and managing a team throughout the competition.

Reacting to the slim loss, Dosu, a gold medalist from the 1996 Atlanta Olympics, praised his players for their spirited display. He described the game as tough but noted that his side gave everything until a defensive error led to the decisive second goal.

“It was a good outing for us despite our narrow defeat,” Dosu said.

“My boys were fantastic throughout the game and they gave everything to win. Unfortunately, we conceded the second goal as a result of an error from our defenders.

“I want to commend and congratulate our opponents for the hard-fought victory. Their victory was well deserved.”

Dosu further appreciated the match officials and the LSFA commissioner for ensuring a smooth and incident-free game.

When asked about the return leg, Dosu remained optimistic but realistic, noting that both teams would face a difficult challenge with equal chances of progressing.

“It will be a tough game for both teams. The two sides have equal chances to move to the next round.”
