The National Sports Commission (NSC) has chosen the Scottish city of Aberdeen as the location for Nigeria’s main overseas training camp ahead of the 2026 Commonwealth Games in Glasgow.

NSC Director-General, Mr Bukola Olopade, made the announcement while unveiling a comprehensive preparation roadmap for Team Nigeria. The Games are scheduled to run from July 22 to August 2, 2026, with preparations set to kick off this Tuesday.

Olopade said the need for federations to uphold rigorous selection standards and prioritise athlete welfare, discipline, and performance excellence. He urged all stakeholders to align with the NSC’s performance-driven strategy.

“Aberdeen was selected because of its world-class facilities, climate that closely mirrors that of Glasgow, and its convenient proximity to the Games Village,” Olopade explained during a meeting with officials from various national sports federations.

In addition to the overseas camp, local training camps will commence across the country this Tuesday. These will focus on early conditioning, comprehensive medical screenings, technical preparations, and improved logistics.

“The welfare of our athletes is non-negotiable.

“They are the heartbeat of our mission to Glasgow, and every decision we make must reflect that priority. The era of excuses is over. Glasgow 2026 is about delivering results.

“This is our opportunity to show that Nigerian sports is firmly back on track focused, purposeful, and truly athlete-centred.”

The NSC chief expressed strong confidence that the 2026 Games will mark Nigeria’s most successful Commonwealth Games performance to date.
