Alex Iwobi Poised For Even More Super Eagles Caps, Says Proud Father
By Saheed Afolabi
Fulham star Alex Iwobi has been described as a determined and committed player with the potential to go well beyond his landmark 100th cap for Nigeria’s Super Eagles.
Barrister Chuba Iwobi, the player’s father and a former footballer himself, expressed immense pride as his son reached the century mark. He reflected warmly on a journey that began in 2015, calling it an amazing chapter in the family’s story.
“We remain ever grateful to the nation for the opportunity Alex has been given. Little did we know that this was the beginning of an incredible journey, which would lead to him achieving the milestone of a hundred caps and the potential of many more.”
The former Arsenal youth captain has already featured in four Africa Cup of Nations tournaments winning silver in 2023 and bronze medals in 2019 and 2025 as well as the 2018 FIFA World Cup. His father highlighted Alex’s unwavering commitment whenever he pulls on the green-and-white jersey.
“Alex loves playing for the nation and always gives his best. No one can ever question his commitment, devotion and patriotism,” he added.
“There have been highs and lows over the years, but he has emerged stronger. We are incredibly proud of his achievements and the experience of playing for the country. We pray that he continues to excel and that the Super Eagles repay the fans for their love and support.”
Iwobi himself expressed deep gratitude to Nigerians at home and in the diaspora for their consistent support throughout his international career.
Speaking ahead of his 100th appearance a friendly against Portugal in Leiria on Wednesday the attacking midfielder recalled his debut against DR Congo in a similar friendly in Visé, Belgium, on October 8, 2015.
“I am proud to be where I am today; proud to wear the green-and-white,” Iwobi said.
“I am grateful to everyone, including the coach who called me up to the team for the first time. I have no regrets choosing Nigeria.
“After 10 years and eight months, I won’t say I am a legend, I only see myself as a Super Eagles player. It feels great to be looking at a 100th cap, and on a lighter note, I wish I can add another 100 caps. I have enjoyed my time with the Super Eagles.”
The Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) noted that Wednesday’s match comes exactly 128 months after Iwobi’s debut, with the milestone appearance also coming in a European friendly.
One of the midfielder’s most cherished moments remains his goal against Zambia at the Godswill Akpabio Stadium in Uyo in October 2017, which helped secure Nigeria’s qualification for the 2018 FIFA World Cup.
