Lagos Assembly Begins Two-Day Orientation for 132 New Staff Members
The Lagos State House of Assembly on Monday commenced a two-day induction programme for newly recruited officers of the Lagos State House of Assembly Service Commission (LAHASCOM) and the Assembly, aimed at preparing them for effective service in the legislative arm of government.
The programme, held at the Lateef Jakande Auditorium within the Assembly complex, brought together 132 newly employed officers drawn from different academic and professional backgrounds.
The exercise was designed to acquaint the new employees with the workings of the Assembly, their responsibilities, ethical standards, and expectations required in the discharge of their duties.
Speaking at the opening ceremony, the Clerk of the House, Barrister Olalekan Onafeko, who represented the Speaker of the Lagos State House of Assembly, Mudashiru Obasa, urged the recruits to remain productive, proactive and professional at all times.
He stressed that the Assembly places a high premium on excellence, accountability and quality service delivery, adding that staff members play a critical role in supporting legislative activities.
Onafeko also took participants through the history of the Lagos State House of Assembly, explaining that the institution was established in 1979 following Nigeria’s return to democratic governance. He noted that the Assembly is constitutionally empowered to make laws, conduct oversight functions and represent the interests of Lagos residents.
In her keynote address, the Chairman of LAHASCOM, Omowunmi Ogbara, advised the newly recruited officers to familiarise themselves with the Lagos State Civil Service Rules and uphold discipline, diligence and ethical conduct in their respective departments.
She also paid tribute to two members of staff who recently passed away, leading participants in a minute of silence in their honour and describing their deaths as a painful loss to the Assembly family.
One of the facilitators at the programme, retired civil servant Mr. Femi Solaja, educated participants on the Public Service Rules and Regulations guiding public officers.
He highlighted key provisions of the Code of Conduct, stressing the importance of honesty, loyalty, integrity and professionalism in public service. Solaja warned officers against corruption, misconduct and any action capable of bringing the service into disrepute.
He further reminded the new employees of the need for punctuality, regular attendance and commitment to duty, noting that public servants are expected to carry out their responsibilities diligently and obey lawful directives.
According to him, official information obtained in the course of duty must be treated with confidentiality and should not be disclosed without proper authorisation.
Solaja also encouraged the recruits to embrace innovation, teamwork and dedication while taking advantage of welfare and leave benefits available to them as public servants.
The induction programme featured interactive sessions that allowed participants to engage with management staff and seek clarification on issues relating to their roles.
The training is expected to continue on Tuesday with additional sessions focused on legislative procedures, administrative processes and the core values that guide the operations of the Lagos State House of Assembly.
