Eguavoen Optimistic On Available Players Ahead Of Comoros Olympics Qualifier
By Saheed Afolabi
Nigeria interim head coach, Augustine Eguavoen has expressed confidence in the players called up to replace several key absentees ahead of Nigeria’s 2028 Olympic qualifying clash with Comoros.
Eguavoen acknowledged the withdrawals of experienced trio Asisat Oshoala, Ashley Plumptre and Oluwatosin Demehin but insisted their absence would not weaken the team’s preparations for the two-legged encounter.
“It is true that we have a number of withdrawals, notably Asisat Oshoala, Ashley Plumptre and Oluwatosin Demehin,” Eguavoen said.
“However, I have confidence in their replacements as these players also have the quality and experience to contribute meaningfully to the team’s success against Comoros.”
The interim coach also revealed that the squad has now settled fully into camp as preparations intensify for the crucial Olympic qualifying fixtures.
“Everyone has settled in well in camp as we have a full house now, and our focus is to present a strong and competitive squad for the two matches,” he added.
Nigeria will face Comoros in a two-leg second-round tie, with both fixtures scheduled for the Remo Stars Stadium in Ikenne-Remo on October 9 and 13. Comoros are unable to host the matches at home because they do not have a CAF-approved venue.
Captain Rasheedat Ajibade will lead the Falcons as they seek to advance to the third round of the African qualifying series and maintain their hopes of making a second consecutive appearance at the Olympic Games, following their participation at Paris 2024.
The aggregate winner of the tie will advance to the third round, which is scheduled for March 2027.
