Apply Now: African Energy Awards 2026 Offers $100,000 Funding
African technology start-ups developing innovative solutions to improve access to clean and reliable electricity can apply for the 2026 African Energy Entrepreneurship Awards.
This is an initiative offering funding, mentorship and business development support to promising energy ventures across Sub-Saharan Africa.
Organised by Octopus Energy Generation in partnership with the Sustainable Markets Initiative (SMI), the awards aim to help early-stage businesses scale their technologies, address energy challenges and create economic opportunities across the continent. Nigerian clean-energy company Salpha Energy is also supporting the 2026 edition.
The programme is particularly interested in start-ups developing solutions for electricity distribution, grid management, energy storage and clean energy generation.
Benefits of the African Energy Entrepreneurship Awards 2026
Three successful businesses will be selected to share a total cash prize pool of £75,000, advertised on the programme’s main page as approximately US$100,000. The funding is non-dilutive, meaning recipients will not have to surrender equity in their businesses in exchange for the award.
Beyond financial support, winners will benefit from:
- Business funding: Capital to support product development, deployment and business expansion.
- Mentorship: Access to experienced energy professionals who can provide strategic guidance.
- Industry insights: Exposure to emerging technologies, market developments and trends shaping the energy sector.
- Business visibility: Opportunities to build industry connections and explore potential follow-on funding through Octopus Energy’s network.
The awards are designed to help promising energy entrepreneurs move beyond early-stage development and expand solutions capable of delivering measurable benefits to communities.

The competition is open to technology-focused start-ups that meet the following requirements:
- The business must be based in an eligible Sub-Saharan African country, including Nigeria.
- The start-up must be no more than five years old.
- Businesses should ideally have fewer than 20 full-time employees, although the organisers may approve exceptions.

Priority will be given to businesses working on power distribution, electricity grid management, energy storage and clean energy generation.
Applicants should review the official competition terms and conditions to confirm their eligibility before submitting an entry.
