A yet-to-be-identified man has been killed in a suspected hit-and-run accident along the Lagos-Ibadan Expressway near the OPIC corridor in Ogun State.

The fatal crash occurred shortly before 1pm on Wednesday, around the OPIC bus stop on the Lagos-bound carriageway.

The victim, reportedly a young adult, was said to have been attempting to cross the expressway towards the roadside when he was struck by a speeding truck.

Witnesses alleged that the truck ran over the man before the driver fled the scene.

The impact caused fatal injuries, with the accident temporarily disrupting traffic as motorists slowed down and manoeuvred around the scene.

An eyewitness identified as Nojeem said the victim was crossing the highway when the truck hit him. He lamented the frequency of fatal accidents along the busy route and called for the construction of a pedestrian bridge to provide safer access for pedestrians.

When the scene was visited shortly after 2pm, the victim’s remains were still on the road.

Confirming the incident, the spokesperson for the Ogun State Traffic Compliance Agency, Babatunde Akinbiyi, said personnel of TRACE, alongside members of the Amotekun Corps, were deployed to manage traffic and respond to the crash.

Akinbiyi described the incident as a suspected hit-and-run case and said it had affected traffic movement along the Lagos-bound section of the expressway.

In a later update issued around 6pm, he confirmed that officials of the Federal Road Safety Corps had removed the victim’s remains from the road and deposited them at the Olabisi Onabanjo University Teaching Hospital, Sagamu.

He added that the evacuation operation had been completed and normal vehicular movement restored along the affected section of the expressway.
