The Lagos State Government has moved to clear the air over car-spotting activities in the city, stressing that enthusiasts are free to pursue their hobby so long as they do not obstruct traffic or invade privacy.

In a statement, Commissioner for Environment and Water Resources Tokunbo Wahab said car spotting remains permissible provided it does not create a nuisance or block the road. “You can do your car spotting without constituting a nuisance or obstructing the road in any way,” he said. “You are welcome to visit car lots and engage in your car-spotting activities there. However, staying on the road for this purpose will not be allowed in any way.”

Wahab added that roadside spotting also raises privacy concerns and will not be tolerated. He thanked residents for their understanding.

The clarification comes against the backdrop of online narratives suggesting the state government intends to drive car spotters off Lagos streets entirely. Popular content creator Ola of Lagos has since demonstrated acceptable spotting practices at the Ikoyi roundabout and other locations, showing how enthusiasts can capture vehicles without disrupting traffic or compromising safety.

Officials maintain that the rules are designed to keep roads free-flowing while still accommodating a popular pastime, provided it is carried out responsibly and in designated spaces such as car lots.
