YCee Defends ‘Olodo Uprising’ Comment, Refuses to Apologise
Nigerian rapper and singer YCee has defended his controversial remarks about the growing popularity of what he described as “brain-rot” content, insisting he has no regrets about referencing popular TikTok content creator Peller.
The artiste recently sparked debate on social media after describing the trend as an “olodo uprising,” using Peller as an example of what he believes is Nigerians’ increasing preference for low-value entertainment over educational content.
His comments attracted mixed reactions, with some critics arguing that he could have made his point without mentioning the TikTok star by name.
Speaking during an interview on Cool FM Lagos, YCee dismissed calls for an apology, saying his comments had been taken out of context.
“Some people are saying I shouldn’t have called Peller’s name, but I said what I said. If you feel offended, you should check yourself,” he said.
The rapper maintained that the backlash only reinforced his concerns about the type of content gaining popularity online.
“A lot of people are also taking what I said out of context. The olodo uprising is even worse than I thought because there are so many people coming out to defend it,” he added.
YCee explained that his criticism was directed at the growing appetite for content he considers intellectually unproductive, rather than at any individual.
According to him, his message was intended to encourage more knowledgeable and creative individuals to venture into content creation.
“My call is to people that are tired of brain-rot contents. There is no reason why intelligent people cannot be streamers or content creators,” he said.
