Wahab Warns Against Patronising Cart Pushers Ahead of Tomorrow Sanitation Exercise
Tokunbo Wahab has urged residents of Lagos State to remain indoors and actively participate in the May edition of the monthly environmental sanitation exercise scheduled for Saturday, May 30, between 6:30 a.m. and 8:30 a.m.
Wahab made the appeal in a statement issued late Thursday, where he commended residents for the level of participation recorded during the reintroduced sanitation exercise held in April.
The commissioner described environmental cleanliness as critical to healthy living and sustainable development, urging Lagosians to dedicate the exercise period to cleaning their homes, drainage channels, surroundings, and public spaces within their communities.
He noted that the sanitation exercise has become a permanent programme in the state and encouraged residents to improve on the compliance level recorded during the previous edition.
According to him, the First Lady of Lagos State, Claudiana Ibijoke Sanwo-Olu, will lead a delegation of government officials to monitor compliance in Alimosho Local Government Area, while the Lagos State Head of Service, Olabode Agoro, will oversee monitoring activities in Apapa Local Government Area.
Wahab further disclosed that adequate compactor trucks had been deployed across the state for prompt evacuation of waste generated during and after the sanitation exercise.
He added that all 57 Local Government Areas and Local Council Development Areas would actively participate in monitoring activities to ensure compliance and maintain a cleaner environment across the state.
The commissioner also urged residents to cultivate a lasting culture of cleanliness and avoid unhygienic practices capable of endangering public health.
He warned residents against patronising cart pushers for waste disposal, describing the practice as illegal, while noting that the operations of Private Sector Participation operators had been expanded to cover more communities.
Wahab stated that abatement notices would be issued to residents who fail to clean their surroundings during the sanitation exercise, warning that defaulters could face prosecution.
He reaffirmed the commitment of the Lagos State Government to maintaining a clean, hygienic, and flood-free environment and advised residents against indiscriminate dumping of refuse in drainage channels and unauthorised locations.
