Lagos, EU Forge Bold Path to Power Next-Generation Megacity
The Lagos State Government and the European Union have renewed their strategic alliance, setting the stage for a smarter, greener, and more resilient megacity.
The renewed partnership took centre stage at a high-level engagement in Alausa, where officials from the state’s Ministry of Physical Planning and Urban Development met with an EU delegation to map out forward-looking solutions. At the heart of the discussions were integrated urban planning, efficient land utilisation, and the development of modern transport systems designed to keep pace with Lagos’ surging population.
Commissioner for Physical Planning and Urban Development, Oluyinka Olumide, underscored the urgency of adopting innovative frameworks that can sustain Lagos’ economic dominance while improving livability. He stressed that deeper technical collaboration and targeted investments will be critical in unlocking infrastructure growth, enhancing mobility, and ensuring inclusive development across the state.
On its part, the EU delegation reaffirmed its commitment to backing Lagos through strategic support focused on climate-resilient infrastructure, smart land-use planning, and interconnected transport corridors. The team described Lagos as a fast-evolving urban powerhouse with the potential to shape the future of sustainable city development across Africa.
Beyond infrastructure, both parties are also prioritising knowledge exchange and institutional strengthening, with plans to introduce technical support systems that will bolster long-term urban governance and planning capacity.
The collaboration fits into the EU’s wider development agenda in Nigeria, particularly under its Global Gateway initiative, which promotes green transitions, digital innovation, and sustainable investments.
As Lagos accelerates its journey toward becoming a fully realised megacity, this strengthened alliance signals more than cooperation—it marks a calculated leap toward building a city that is not only bigger, but smarter, more connected, and globally competitive.
