School Teacher Risks 3yr Jail Term Over Sexual Assault On Pupil
By Felix Kuyinu
A school teacher, Olufemi Akinyemi, has been arraigned in court over allegations of sexual assault on a pupil at a school in Lagos.
Akinyemi was put on trial over charges of sexual assault and improper behaviour imposed on him by the police who stated that the quinquagenarian suspect violated the laws of the state and deserving of imprisonment.
The prosecutor, Adegoke Ademigbuyi, during the trial at Ikeja Magistrates’ Court on Friday, mentioned that the 55-year-old defendant, on March 10, at a private school in Anthony Village, Oshodi, touched the victim inappropriately and kissed her before she ran out to inform the school’s hostel mistress.
Despite the suspect’s non guilty plea, Ademigbuyi told the court magistrate, Omolara Kushanu, that the unlawful act on the 14-year-old student contravened the provisions enshrined in Sections 263 and 264 of the state’s Criminal Law, 2015, which prescribes a three-year prison term on offenders.
In reaction, Kushanu, following a grant of N500,000 bail granted on the litigant, with two sureties to be provided, ordered that he should be remanded in prison prior till his next arraignment in court on May 14.
