A 38-year-old woman, Olaide Majekodunmi, has been arraigned before the Ikeja Magistrate Court in Lagos over an alleged N30 million fraud involving a purported proof of funds document for a Canada trip.
Majekodunmi was arraigned before Magistrate L.A. Owolabi following a complaint by Abimbola Sadiq, who alleged that the defendant collected N30 million from her under false pretence.
The prosecution, led by SP Josephine Ihkayere, told the court that the alleged incident occurred in August 2025 at about 2pm in the Ogba area of Lagos, within the Ikeja Magisterial District.
According to the charge sheet filed by the Commissioner of Police, Majekodunmi allegedly obtained the N30 million from Sadiq after claiming that the money would be used to process a proof of funds document required for the complainant’s proposed travel to Canada.
The police alleged that the defendant knew the representation to be false when it was made.
The first count was brought under Section 314 of the Criminal Law of Lagos State, 2015, which deals with obtaining money by false pretence.
In the second count, the police alleged that Majekodunmi stole the N30 million belonging to Sadiq by converting the money to her personal use.
The offence was said to contravene Section 280 and is punishable under Section 287 of the Criminal Law of Lagos State, 2015.
The third count borders on alleged conduct likely to cause a breach of peace.
The prosecution alleged that Majekodunmi threatened the complainant and allegedly threatened to circulate her nude pictures on social media platforms in an attempt to stop her from demanding a refund of the N30 million.
The police said the alleged conduct contravened Section 168(d) of the Criminal Law of Lagos State, 2015.
Majekodunmi pleaded not guilty to the charges after they were read to her.
Following the plea, Magistrate Owolabi granted her bail with two sureties, who are required to provide evidence of their means of livelihood and tax payment.
The court, however, ordered that the defendant remain at the Correctional Centre, Kirikiri Town, pending the perfection of her bail conditions.
The Investigating Police Officer, CPL Saka Olushola of the Area G Command, Ogba, Lagos, is handling the case.
The matter was adjourned, with a date for further proceedings expected to be fixed after the defendant meets the bail conditions.
Members of the public seeking to travel abroad are advised to verify financial and travel documentation requirements through accredited banks, relevant embassies and licensed travel consultants before making payments.
All allegations against Majekodunmi remain unproven. She is presumed innocent until proven guilty by a court of competent jurisdiction.
Efforts to obtain her reaction to the allegations were unsuccessful as of the time of filing this report.
