Woman Arraigned For Stabbing Female Victim

A 42-year-old woman is facing trial for allegedly stabbing a female complainant in Lagos.

The suspect, Gift Yahaya, was arraigned by the police before the Ogudu Magistrates’ Court in Lagos.

Police Prosecutor, Inspector Sunday Bassey, claimed that the defendant stabbed the victim, her neighbour, Kehinde Adesanya, over accusation on the latter of having an amorous affair with her husband.

Bassey while stating that the two litigants reside at 26, Oyebanjo Street, Alapere in Ketu Lagos informed that the accused is standing trial on a two-count charge of conspiracy and assault.

He said, “The defendant assaulted the complainant, by slapping and hitting her several times. She, thereafter, stabbed the complainant on her left hand with a broken bottle.

“The complaint sustained a deep injury on her hand.

“The defendant had accused the complainant of having an affair with her husband,” Bassey said.

According to the prosecutor, the offences contravene Section 173 and 411 of the Criminal Law of Lagos State, 2015. Bassey said.

The defendant, however, pleaded not guilty.

According to reports, Section 173 provides three years imprisonment for anyone found guilty of unlawful assault on another.

The court granted the defendant bail in the sum of N200,000 with two sureties in like sum. The sureties, according to the court ordering must be gainfully employed and must provide proof of tax payments.

The addresses of the sureties must be verified and one of them must be a blood relative to the defendant, the court ordered.

The matter was adjourned until September 5.
