Super Eagles Set for Lagos Return as Teslim Balogun Stadium Gets World-Class Upgrade
The historic Teslim Balogun Stadium in Surulere, Lagos, is set for a major transformation that could pave the way for the return of international football to the commercial capital.
The iconic stadium is currently undergoing extensive rehabilitation, including the replacement of its artificial turf with a lush natural-grass pitch designed to meet FIFA standards for elite international matches.
The project also includes the installation of new, colourful spectator seats with backrests, while the stands are being covered by an extensive roofing structure to provide improved comfort for fans.
Other major upgrades include a new hospitality suite, modern dressing rooms, a standard players’ walk-out tunnel and upgraded floodlights to support night matches.
With an official seating capacity of about 24,325 to 25,000 spectators, the refurbished Teslim Balogun Stadium could once again become a major venue for high-profile football fixtures in Lagos.
The rehabilitation extends beyond the main football pitch.
The indoor sports hall, Olympic-standard swimming pool and a new tartan athletics track are also being incorporated into the redevelopment, positioning the complex to host a wider range of national and international sporting events.
The development is part of the Lagos State Government’s efforts under Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu to restore the iconic sporting facility before the end of his administration.
For Nigerian football fans, the prospect of the Super Eagles returning to Lagos adds particular significance to the project, as the city has historically played an important role in the national team’s football history.
With work progressing at the stadium, attention will now turn to when the revamped facility will officially reopen and whether it will once again become a regular home for the Super Eagles.
