South African singer Tyla has made history at the 2026 American Music Awards after clinching two major awards and emerging as the only African artiste to win at the 52nd edition of the ceremony.

Tyla, whose full name is Tyla Laura Seethal, won Best Afrobeats Artist, beating strong contenders including Burna Boy, Wizkid, Rema and Moliy.

She also claimed the fan-voted Social Song of the Year award for her hit single “Chanel”, further cementing her growing global influence.

The “Water” crooner entered the night as the most nominated African artiste in AMA history, with four nominations, including Best Music Video and Best Female R&B Artist.

Released in October 2025, “Chanel” has since become a global success, surpassing 320 million streams on Spotify and topping charts across multiple countries.

Tyla first rose to international fame in 2023 with her breakout hit “Water,” a fusion of Amapiano and R&B that reached the top 10 of the US Billboard Hot 100 and earned her a Grammy Award for Best African Music Performance.

Her latest AMA success marks another major milestone in her fast-rising global career and highlights the increasing global recognition of African music on the world stage.
