Controversial movie critic Tolu Fagbure has criticised actress Tayo Sobola, popularly known as Sotayogaga, claiming that her permanent tattoo could limit the roles available to her in Nollywood.
Fagbure made the claim while discussing the importance of professional training and discipline in shaping actors’ careers.
Speaking during a recent interview with Dele Adeyanju on Agbaletu TV, the critic argued that actors should consider how permanent physical features could affect their ability to fit into different movie characters.
Using Sotayogaga as an example, Fagbure claimed that the actress had “lost her place in acting” because of the tattoo on her arm, particularly because, according to him, she often wears outfits that expose it.
He questioned whether she could convincingly portray certain traditional or conservative characters, including a responsible housewife or a child.
«“Tayo Sobola should be trained. That lady is trainable. In my own opinion, I think she has lost her place in acting because of the permanent tattoo on her arm and she would insist on wearing dresses that would expose the tattoo.”»
Fagbure further argued that actors should avoid permanent body markings, piercings or other physical features that cannot be altered for different roles.
“As an actor, you’re not supposed to have body markings, body piercings or permanent features on your body. You’re not supposed to have anything that cannot be removed from you for a movie role.”
His comments were made in the context of his broader argument that professional training should help actors understand the demands and limitations that come with different roles in the film industry.
Sotayogaga’s response to the comments was not included in the account.
