Sanwo-Olu Reaffirms Commitment to Grassroots Development, Community Partnerships
By Emmanuel Daniji
LAGOS — Lagos State Governor Babajide Olusola Sanwo-Olu has reaffirmed his administration’s commitment to strengthening grassroots development through continued collaboration with Community Development Associations (CDAs) and Community Development Committees (CDCs) across the state.
The Governor gave the assurance during an interactive session with members of the Lagos State Community Development Advisory Council (LSCDAC) held at Alausa, Lagos.
The meeting provided an opportunity for government officials and community development leaders to discuss issues affecting residents at the grassroots and explore ways of making community-driven development more effective across the state.
Government, Communities Meet Over Development
The engagement reflects the growing emphasis on collaboration between government and residents in identifying and addressing development needs.
Rather than relying solely on government institutions to determine priorities, the community development structure provides a platform through which residents can communicate local concerns and participate in projects designed to improve their neighbourhoods.
Speaking at the session, the Special Adviser to the Governor on Rural Development, Dr. Nurudeen Yekinni Agbaje, described Sanwo-Olu as a community-oriented leader who has consistently demonstrated concern for the development and welfare of residents at the grassroots.
Agbaje commended the Governor for various interventions carried out across communities, saying the administration’s engagement with community leaders has helped strengthen grassroots participation in governance and development.
Community Leaders Praise Sanwo-Olu
The Chairman of the LSCDAC, Alhaji Azeez Amusat, also commended the Governor for his administration’s efforts in advancing infrastructure and development across Lagos.
Amusat particularly highlighted the Governor’s support for the annual Lagos Community Day celebrations.
The initiative allows CDAs and CDCs to identify specific needs within their communities and undertake self-help projects capable of producing direct benefits for residents.
According to Amusat, the programme has helped promote a greater sense of participation and ownership, as residents become directly involved in deciding and implementing projects that affect their everyday lives.
‘We Will Continue to Support You’
Responding to the concerns and contributions from the community development leaders, Governor Sanwo-Olu pledged that the Lagos State Government would continue to work closely with CDAs and CDCs.
He assured the stakeholders of sustained collaboration, support and partnership in advancing development at the grassroots.
The Governor stressed that residents must remain active participants in governance, noting that government needs to continue creating platforms where communities can contribute to development decisions and benefit directly from government initiatives.
He also assured community leaders that his administration would continue supporting programmes designed to ensure that the dividends of democracy reach communities across Lagos.
Putting Communities at the Centre
The interactive session underscored the importance of community participation in the development of Lagos.
For many residents, grassroots development is ultimately measured by the issues they encounter in their immediate surroundings—from roads and drainage to healthcare, security, education and other basic infrastructure.
Community associations and development committees can therefore provide government with direct insight into those everyday challenges while also helping residents take ownership of solutions.
The Lagos State Government’s continued engagement with these groups signals an approach in which development is not viewed solely as a responsibility of government but as a shared process involving communities themselves.
The meeting at Alausa consequently reinforced the administration’s emphasis on inclusive governance, sustained community partnership and development driven by the needs of residents.
