Motorists To Face Traffic As Kara Bridge Repairs Begin

Motorists travelling along the Lagos-Ibadan Expressway should expect traffic disruption around the Kara Bridge as repair works on the busy bridge begin on Tuesday, September 8, 2026.
The Lagos State Government has urged commuters and long-distance travellers using the route to plan their journeys ahead and allow extra travel time as the Federal Ministry of Works begins repairs on damaged expansion joints on the bridge.
The rehabilitation is expected to last for two weeks and is likely to temporarily affect the movement of vehicles along one of the busiest highways connecting Lagos with other parts of the country.
In a travel advisory issued on Monday, the Lagos State Ministry of Transportation said traffic management measures had been put in place to reduce the impact of the repairs on motorists.
According to the ministry, one half of the affected section of the bridge will be closed at a time, while traffic will be managed interchangeably on the remaining open half.
The arrangement is expected to allow repair work to continue while vehicles are still able to pass through the corridor.
The state government advised motorists to factor the expected delays into their travel plans and, where possible, make adjustments to their departure times to avoid being caught in heavy traffic.
It also appealed to road users to remain patient and cooperate with traffic managers and other officials who will be deployed around the area throughout the rehabilitation period.
The government said the cooperation of motorists would be important to ensuring that the repair works are completed within the scheduled two-week period.
The advisory was signed by the Lagos State Commissioner for Transportation, Mr Oluwaseun Osiyemi.
The Kara Bridge sits along the Lagos-Ibadan Expressway, a major transport route used daily by thousands of motorists travelling between Lagos and communities and cities across Ogun State and other parts of the country.
With the bridge repairs expected to narrow the available road space temporarily, commuters have been advised to plan ahead rather than wait until they reach the affected corridor before making adjustments.
Motorists using the route during the rehabilitation period are therefore expected to prepare for longer journey times and follow instructions from traffic officials as the authorities work to keep traffic moving while the repairs are carried out.
