Sympathizers have been visiting the Iowa Family on the perennially flooded Gabriel Alasania Street to commiserate with them over the unfortunate death of their daughter, Retuned, a 48 year old mother of Four killed by the flood of Saturday, October 12 2019.

Retuned, slightly handicapped, had gone into the rain to rake off debris from the stormy flood making its way through the street when she suddenly slipped and fell into the drainage.

The drainage, which also passes through Gold Street to Eckancar on its way to the canal, was too strong for her to regain balance and creep out.

Besides, the fact that the concrete drainage of over 3 kilometres was covered hid her body from residents as it was transported by the flood until it got to guardrails meant to stop debris at Eckancar where her body got stuck.

At home, her septuagenarian mother became worried over two hours after she announced she was going to rake debris off the flood and raised alarm which led to the search party that found her body.

She will be buried this week.

According to a family source who narrated the incident to ECHONEWS, the deceased who was living with her parents, usually did the evacuation together with her father but due to the father’s absence, she did it all alone on that fateful day.

“She used to do the evacuation with the father because whenever it rains the flood flows into the compound. That day, the rain was too much. The father was not around. She was at home with her mother who just came back from abroad. She left the compound to desilt the gutter outside.

“The mother and her children who were inside were expecting her to come back in but when they couldn’t see her about two hours later, they looked for her outside but she was not there. It was around 7pm they discovered her remains.

“We believed that she slit into the gutter and in the process hit her head on the block because we saw bruise on her head. When she slid into the gutter, nobody was there to rescue her otherwise she might have been saved. She was submerged by the deluge and was taken away by the flood,” the source said.
