PDP Leaders, Rhodes-Vivour, Others Celebrate Funsho Williams’ Legacy
Former Deputy National Chairman of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Olabode George, on Monday led party leaders, associates and admirers in paying tribute to the late Funsho Williams, describing him as an epitome of civility whose legacy continues to inspire Nigerians two decades after his assassination.
The tributes came during a remembrance service held at St. Dominic’s Catholic Church, Yaba, Lagos, to commemorate the 20th anniversary of the killing of the former Lagos State governorship candidate.
Among those in attendance were former Lagos State Deputy Governor and PDP chieftain, Kofoworola Akerele-Bucknor, members of the PDP leadership in Lagos State, family members, friends and political associates of the late politician.
Speaking at the event, George recalled the circumstances surrounding Williams’ death, describing the loss as one that continues to resonate deeply within the PDP and the nation.
Also paying tribute, politician and public policy advocate, Dr. Funso Doherty, described Williams as a leader whose legacy of integrity, selfless service and visionary leadership remains worthy of emulation.
Lagos State PDP Chairman, Dr. Amos Fawole, described Williams as a distinguished engineer, accomplished politician and a true son of Lagos State.
According to Fawole, Williams envisioned a Lagos built on competence, integrity, inclusiveness and genuine concern for the welfare of its people.
He urged Nigerians to uphold the values that defined the late politician’s life, including integrity, compassion, sacrifice, excellence and commitment to the common good.
In his homily, the officiating priest, Rev. Fr. Dominic Mbom, encouraged the congregation to live exemplary lives, reminding them that their actions and choices would define the legacy they leave behind.
The African Democratic Congress (ADC) governorship candidate in the 2023 Lagos State election, Gbadebo Rhodes-Vivour, also honoured Williams.
In a post on his X account, Rhodes-Vivour shared a photograph of the late politician with the caption: “We remember. Omoluabi Eko. Rest on, Captain.”
Similarly, the APM governorship candidate for the 2027 Lagos governorship election, Laja Adeoye, described Williams as “a rare gem” whose vision, integrity and courage remain an enduring example for public office holders.
He urged political leaders to honour Williams’ memory by remaining united, serving the people faithfully and preserving the ideals of transparency, integrity and public service for which the late politician was widely respected.
