As part of efforts to control floods in the community, Ibeju-Lekki Local Government under the chairmanship of Hon. Sesan Olowa has embarked on the dredging and desilting of blocked canals and drains within the council area.
The move, according to the government, is to prevent incessant flooding being experienced by residents.
The first point of call for the exercise was Gbetu/Eyinira communities.
The council boss, who visited the scene to oversee the exercise, expressed his displeasure at the level of blockage of water channels in the axis.
He said his administration embarked on the project despite the residents’ defying nature.
“Because it is our responsibility as a government to ensure a healthy environment and well-being of the residents, we have embraced the challenges to fulfill our campaign promises on the environment,” he stated.
In the continued fight against flooding and erosion, Olowa said the local government has mapped out other communities prone to flood to benefit from the dredging exercise.
The communities are Ofinran, Lagasa, and Loshoro.
In the same vein and following the complaints of communities around Lekki Gardens Estate, the council boss also visited the Estate for the physical assessment of the degradation caused by flood from the estate and its effect on other communities around the area.
While relating his concerns to representatives of the Estate, Olowa promised that the council would take necessary measures if the management of the estate does not desist from degrading the environment thereby putting other communities at risk.
He emphasised the need for residents to collaborate with the government in ensuring hazard free environment and great consideration for other residents.
