For the second time, the leader of the Legislative Arm in the old Oshodi-Isolo local government, Hon. Sikiru Adesina Salisu is seeking to be the flag bearer of the ruling All Progressives Congress in the forthcoming chairmanship polls.
To boost his chances, he is appealing to the
the leadership of the party to give him the chance to be the party’s candidate in the election.
Salisu is joining the incumbent Secretary to the Local Government (SLG), Hon. Emmanuel Olojede from the same Ilasamaja ward to contest the position.
Salisu was the leader of the Oshodi-Isolo Legislative Arm between 1999 and 2003, his tenure was the last before the creation of Isolo and Ejigbo LCDAs.
He has also served as the supervisory councillor for revenue in Isolo LCDA during the first term of the incumbent Chairman, Hon. Shamsudeen Olaleye.
Speaking to ECHONEWS about his aspiration, Salisu complained that he has waited for long and has been denied the chance to contest.
According to him, political peculiarities of Isolo LCDA have worked against his aspirations right from the creation of the LCDA.
He explained that he (Salisu) and the other council leaders across the state were promised by the then governor, Asiwaju Bola Ahmed Tinubu, to be given the chance to be reelected or to contest for another political post if they backed- to the creation of LCDAs in their respective areas.
He said, however, his case was different in Isolo as he lost out in the councillorship primaries when he recontested to represent Ilasamaja Ward.
Noting that e said he would not want to be denied the chance by the party again, Salisu assured party members that he is capable to be the next chairman based on his vast experience in local government administration.
His words: “I believe that Isolo has its peculiar problems and those factors have denied me chances and opportunities because the promises Asiwaju made to me and my counterparts in 2003 could not be realused here. He made a promise to all council leaders that if we approved the creation of additional local governments, we would have the advantage of recontesting or contesting for another position and the political leaders and elders in the council must support us. This was not the case in Isolo unlike other areas because I was denied the chance to represent Ilasamaja Ward in the new Isolo LCDA.
“The current speaker of Lagos State House of Assembly (LAHA), Hon. Mudashiru Obasa was a councillor then. He was considered and contested for the House of Assembly and that is how he rose to become the speaker of the House. We are contemporaries. Hon. Yemi Alli was the council leader in Mushin local government, he was also considered later on. He served three times as the chairman of Mushin local government and now a House of Reps member.
“The funny part is that my majority leader then,; Babatunde Ayeni, contested for the House of Assembly in Oshodi and won twice and now he represents Ilesha Federal Constituency 1 in the House of Reps. Even Hon. Bashua on Island was a councillor too, he is now three-time chairman in Lagos Island East.”
Although he lost the bid to contest, he became a political appointee charged with managing the revenue generation of the Isolo LCDA.
“I was able to double the council’s revenue when I served as the supervisory councillor for revenue and that is to show that I’m competent to be the helmsman,” he boasted.
He said, despite his trials and triumphs, he has stood by the party.
“In addition to that, I supported the party during the election by making adequate provision for all agents at the polling units, which cost me more than N400,000.”
Reiterating his appeal to the party leaders, Salisu assured them that he has the experience to succeed.
“My appeal to the party leadership now is that they should allow me. I know so much about how the LCDA was created and it has been to the much benefit of those that are new in the party and system. I’m appealing to them to consider me for the position. I will be glad to have that chance to prove to them that I have all it takes. I have the experience and understanding.
“The party should make sure that a qualified and credible candidate gets the ticket. I was once a supervisor and leader of the house and that is to show that I have the experience of executive and legislative.”
