NARD Urges Swift Resolution Of LASUTH Industrial Action Amid Rising Pressure On Lagos Health Services

The national leadership of the Nigerian Association of Resident Doctors, under President Dr Mohammad Usman Suleiman, has formally aligned itself with the Association of Resident Doctors at the Lagos State University Teaching Hospital and called on the Lagos State Government to take immediate steps to end the ongoing strike.
The industrial action has removed a substantial portion of the hospital’s medical workforce from active duty, leaving emergency, surgical and specialist units operating at reduced capacity. For patients, the consequences are direct and measurable: delayed diagnoses, postponed elective procedures, longer waiting times for critical interventions and, in some cases, the need to seek care at already overstretched alternative facilities across the metropolis.
At the system level, the disruption places additional strain on Lagos’s tertiary-care network. LASUTH functions as a major referral centre; its partial shutdown forces secondary hospitals and private providers to absorb complex cases they are often ill-equipped to manage, elevating clinical risk and operational costs throughout the state’s health sector. Prolonged absence of resident doctors also interrupts training pipelines and weakens the continuous supervision that underpins safe service delivery.
NARD’s intervention elevates the dispute from a local institutional matter to one of broader public-health significance, underscoring the need for an expedited settlement that restores full clinical capacity and mitigates further deterioration in patient outcomes.
