A fresh wave of environmental action is sweeping through Lagos, as government and community leaders intensify preparations for the return of the state’s monthly sanitation exercise.

At the forefront of the campaign is the Executive Chairman of Ibeju-Lekki Local Government, Hon. Sesan Olowa, who is championing a renewed call for residents to take ownership of their surroundings and embrace a culture of cleanliness. His message is clear: a cleaner Lagos begins with collective responsibility at the grassroots.

The reintroduced sanitation exercise is scheduled to be held on the last Saturday of every month, with early morning hours dedicated to clearing waste, unblocking drainage channels, and restoring order across neighbourhoods.

Olowa, alongside fellow council chairmen, has pledged unwavering support for the initiative, stressing that community participation will be key to addressing the city’s growing waste burden. With Lagos generating massive volumes of refuse daily, officials say consistent sanitation efforts are vital to safeguarding public health and preventing environmental hazards.

Behind the scenes, coordination is underway between state authorities and all 57 local governments and LCDAs to ensure effective implementation. Monitoring teams are also expected to be deployed to enforce compliance and sustain momentum.

But beyond the routine clean-up, authorities see the exercise as part of a bigger vision—to build a flood-resilient, healthier, and more sustainable megacity. Residents are being urged to go beyond compliance by adopting proper waste disposal habits and protecting shared public spaces.

With strong backing from grassroots leaders like Olowa, the initiative is fast evolving into a collective movement—one that seeks to restore environmental discipline and redefine urban living standards in Nigeria’s busiest city.
