As the 2026 NWFL Championship gets underway in Calabar, Fortress Ladies FC head coach Jimmy Aimuagbonrie has expressed strong confidence in his team’s chances of securing promotion to the elite NWFL Premiership.
The Benin City-based side is drawn in Group C alongside Rangers Women FC, Wazbak Queens and Unification Ladies enters the tournament with renewed determination. The competition, running from July 11 to 16, offers two promotion spots to the top-flight league.
Speaking ahead of the campaign, Aimuagbonrie highlighted the team’s experience and readiness.
“The Chances are very high because we have been here before we are not new to the challenges and we believe we are good to go.”
He doubled down on the squad’s preparedness while showing the club’s readiness to face the challenges ahead.
“Like I said before we are good to go, we respect all our opponents but we are very ready for promotion to NWFL Premiership.”
Fortress Ladies have been consistent performers in recent seasons. This year, the club aims to go one step further and claim one of the promotion tickets.
The 2026 NWFL Championship features 16 teams battling in four groups, with the top teams advancing to decisive playoff stages to select the two finalists who will eventually seal the promotion ticket, while the last placed teams in the four groups will battle it out in the relegation playoffs and the two defeated teams will be relegated to the Nationwide.
Fans and followers of Nigerian women’s football will be watching closely as the Benin City outfit looks to soar in Calabar.
