The Lagos State Government, LASG, through it’s Directorate for Citizens Rights, DCR, has paid a visit to the Correctional Centre in Ikoyi to sensitize inmates on social reintegration and also offer rehabilitative support.
The DCR, in a bid to create awareness on the rights of the inmates as citizens of the state also aimed at preparing them on the needed orientation which cut across evaluation of educational, vocational and psychological support services.
DCR Director, Adetutu Oshinusi, explained that the motive behind the visit also cut across creating an avenue towards decongestion of prisons across the State.
Oshinusi informed that the DCR was established with the purpose of promoting non-custodial sentences for minor offences such as probation, fines and community services. She stated that the body supports initiatives that aid early release of inmates who have demonstrated good behaviors and have completed rehabilitation programs.
Also speaking, the Legal Officer, Ikoyi Correctional Centre, Ayinde Adeniyi, lauded the Lagos State Government and Ministry of Justice for the support and commitment towards ensuring that the rights of the inmates are respected and upheld.
Adeniyi noted that the information and guidance provided at the event will undoubtedly empower the inmates with a better understanding of their rights and the legal avenues available to them.
She appreciated the efforts of the state government on advocating for fair treatment, provision of legal assistance, and working towards improving the conditions within the facilities of the Correctional Centre.
Domestic consumables for the inmates were handed over to the warders at the Center which had 3,402 Inmates out of which 135 have had court appearances.
