Health District III of the Lagos State Government is using World Breastfeeding Week 2026 to remind residents of a simple truth: breastfeeding is every mother’s right and every child’s best start.
On Monday, Permanent Secretary Dr. Monsurat Adeleke issued a statement that framed the week’s observance as more than a calendar event. She described it as a collective call to action. When communities, workplaces, and families rally around breastfeeding, she said, they invest in healthier children, stronger families, and a more resilient Lagos.
This year’s theme, “Breastfeeding for a Sustainable Start in Life: Strengthen What Works,” struck her as particularly fitting. Observed every year from 1 to 7 August, the global campaign returns attention to a practice that has sustained generations yet still needs deliberate support in modern life.
Dr. Adeleke spoke of breast milk’s quiet power. It offers natural protection against illness, strengthens immunity from the earliest days. It nourishes the developing brain and supplies the precise nutrients a growing child needs. Beyond the physical, it deepens the bond between mother and baby, building emotional security that lasts. And in practical terms, it remains affordable, accessible, and always available—no packaging, no cost, no shortage.
Her appeal was direct and inclusive. She urged Lagosians to join the movement through health talks and expert sessions, community outreach and education, and everyday acts of support for nursing mothers. Promoting baby-friendly spaces and practices, she suggested, is how the city can strengthen what already works.
