Toba Ijaya’s Death: Supporters Demand Speedy Police Investigation

Nearly a month after the killing of Lagos National Union of Road Transport Workers (NURTW) chieftain, Comrade Toba Ajiboye, popularly known as Toba Ijaya, supporters, family members and residents of Fadeyi have continued to demand a swift conclusion of the police investigation into his assassination.

The late transport leader was attacked by gunmen on July 12, 2026, along Ikorodu Road in Fadeyi while returning home. He later died from gunshot injuries, sending shockwaves across Lagos and sparking widespread condemnation.

Although the police have made a number of arrests since the incident, the alleged masterminds behind the killing are yet to be brought to justice, leaving many of his supporters increasingly frustrated.

When Echonews visited the deceased’s residence, sympathisers who had gathered expressed concern over what they described as the slow pace of the investigation. They appealed to the Nigeria Police Force to intensify efforts to apprehend everyone connected with the murder.

One supporter, who identified himself simply as Ade, said the family and loyalists are still struggling to come to terms with the tragic loss.

“Toba was more than a transport leader. He was someone many people depended on. We appreciate the police for the arrests made so far, but we want those who planned and executed this crime to face justice,” he said.

Another resident noted that while rumours have linked a bricklayer and other suspected informants to the case, many questions remain unanswered.

“The public deserves to know what really happened. We don’t want this case to become another unresolved assassination,” the resident added.

At the Lagos State Police Command Headquarters, Echonews sought an update on the investigation. Although the Commissioner of Police was unavailable for comments, two senior police officers, who declined to be named because they were not authorised to speak officially, confirmed that investigations are still ongoing.

According to the officers, detectives are pursuing several leads and remain committed to identifying and arresting all those connected with the killing.

“The investigation has not been closed. The manhunt for the remaining suspects is still ongoing, and more details will be made public at the appropriate time,” one of the officers said.

Police sources, however, declined to comment on reports alleging that a bricklayer who was familiar with the deceased may have supplied information about the vehicle Toba Ijaya was travelling in before the attack, insisting that revealing sensitive details could jeopardise ongoing investigations.

Meanwhile, family members and supporters continue to hope that justice will be served, saying the arrest and prosecution of everyone involved would not only bring closure to the family but also reassure Lagos residents that those behind violent crimes cannot escape the law.

The killing of Toba Ijaya remains one of the most talked-about criminal cases in Lagos in recent months, with many residents closely watching the outcome of the police investigation.
