Applications are now open for the National Youth Pension Literacy Essay Competition 2026.

This is an opportunity for Nigerian secondary school students, tertiary institution students and serving NYSC members to showcase their ideas on the future of retirement in Nigeria.

The competition, organised as part of National Pension Week 2026, is designed to promote pension awareness, financial literacy and early retirement planning among young Nigerians.

Participants are expected to write an essay on the topic: “My Dream for a Great Retirement Experience in Nigeria.”

The competition offers a combined ₦2.5 million in cash prizes, with winners also receiving laptops, trophies and certificates.

Who Can Apply?

The competition has two categories:

Category A – Secondary School Students

This category is open to students currently enrolled in recognised secondary schools in Nigeria.

Participants are required to submit an essay of not more than 500 words.

The winner will receive:

  • ₦1 million cash prize
  • Laptop
  • Trophy
  • Certificate

Entries will be assessed based on originality and creativity, understanding of pensions and retirement planning, relevance to the topic, organisation and clarity, and quality of writing.

Category B – Tertiary Students and NYSC Members

The second category is open to students currently enrolled in recognised Nigerian tertiary institutions and serving members of the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC).

Applicants in this category must submit an essay of not more than 1,000 words.

The winner will receive:

  • ₦1.5 million cash prize
  • Laptop
  • Trophy
  • Certificate

Judges will consider research and understanding, critical thinking, practical recommendations, innovation and originality, as well as the structure and quality of the essay.

Essay Topic

All applicants must write on:

“My Dream for a Great Retirement Experience in Nigeria.”

Participants are expected to explore how today’s decisions, policies, innovations and approaches to pension planning can contribute to better retirement experiences for Nigerians in the future.

The competition provides an opportunity for young Nigerians to examine issues around financial independence, pension awareness, retirement planning and pension-sector reform.

How Entries Will Be Judged

For the secondary school category, entries will be assessed using the following criteria:

  • Originality and creativity – 30%
  • Understanding of pensions and retirement planning – 25%
  • Relevance to the topic – 20%
  • Organisation and clarity – 15%
  • Grammar and writing quality – 10%

For tertiary students and NYSC members:

  • Research and understanding – 25%
  • Critical thinking – 25%
  • Practical recommendations – 20%
  • Innovation and originality – 15%
  • Structure and writing quality – 15%

Important Submission Requirements

Applicants are expected to submit original essays prepared specifically for the competition. Each participant may submit only one entry.

The essay should comply with the specified word limit and submission requirements. Shortlisted participants may be required to provide evidence of their student or NYSC status during the verification process.

The organisers may also conduct originality checks and request further verification of authorship where necessary.
