James, Aderonke Emerge Winners At 2027 Abeokuta 10km Race

Musa Francis James and Akanbi Aderonke Olufunmilayo stood on top of the podium on Saturday after claiming the men’s and women’s titles at the fifth Abeokuta 10km Race in Ogun State, each taking home the $1,000 first prize money.
James believes the win was the clear payoff for months of focused preparation and hard work in achieving the astonishing results.
He further commended the organizers for putting up a platform for their talents to be showcased
He led from the front and crossed the line in 30:25.33, leaving Ilya Raymond (30:38.06) and Gyang Sunday (30:47.00) in his wake.
“I’m very happy with the victory. It feels good to see all the hard work and preparation pay off. I’m grateful for the opportunity to compete here, and I want to appreciate the organisers for putting together such a good race and giving athletes like us the platform to compete and challenge ourselves.”
Akanbi produced a similarly decisive performance in the women’s race, finishing in 35:00.69 to beat Bulus Mary Jah (35:58.71) and Nwantiyi Teyei Davou (36:03.09).
“I am very happy to have won the women’s race. It was not easy, but I am glad that all the hard work paid off. I commend the organisers for creating this opportunity and for the effort they put into making the race a success. I hope the Abeokuta 10km Race continues to grow and gives more athletes the chance to compete at this level.”
Both winners highlighted the satisfaction of watching their training translate into results on race day. The equal prize money for men and women added extra meaning to their success, reinforcing the sense that the platform itself valued their achievements equally.
Raymond and Gyang, who joined James on the men’s podium, and the women’s runners-up, also spoke of the same drive that pushed the winners to the front which is the chance to test themselves, see their preparation rewarded, and race in front of a supportive Abeokuta crowd.
Organized by Nilayo Sports Management Limited, the fifth edition drew athletes, fitness enthusiasts and local residents to witness a scintillating show of athletes showcasing their zeal, and hunger for success.
