The Nigerian Maritime Administration and Safety Agency (NIMASA) has launched a new hackathon and accelerator programme aimed at identifying, supporting and scaling innovative startups operating within Nigeria’s blue economy.

The initiative is designed to provide young entrepreneurs and technology-driven businesses with opportunities to develop practical solutions to challenges across the maritime sector while contributing to economic growth and job creation.

Participants are expected to explore innovative ideas and technologies across areas such as maritime logistics, shipping, fisheries, marine transportation, port operations, environmental sustainability and other emerging areas of the blue economy.

Selected startups will have access to structured support, including mentorship, capacity-building, industry exposure and opportunities to refine their business models. The accelerator component is also expected to help promising ventures move from early-stage ideas towards market-ready solutions.

According to NIMASA, the programme forms part of efforts to promote innovation and entrepreneurship as tools for unlocking the economic potential of Nigeria’s maritime sector.

The agency said supporting technology and innovation in the blue economy could help create new businesses, attract investment and provide employment opportunities for young Nigerians.

The programme also provides an opportunity for entrepreneurs, innovators and technology enthusiasts with solutions to maritime-sector challenges to gain exposure and connect with relevant industry stakeholders.

The initiative is targeted at startups, innovators, entrepreneurs and technology-focused teams developing solutions relevant to Nigeria’s maritime and blue economy ecosystem.
