Lagos State governorship candidate of the All Progressives Congress (APC), Dr Obafemi Hamzat, has outlined plans to consolidate existing interventions and introduce new measures in education, healthcare, housing, waste management, emergency response and economic development if elected governor in 2027.

Hamzat, the incumbent Deputy Governor, presented his agenda on Thursday at The Platform Nigeria Town Hall Meeting for Lagos State governorship candidates, where he also defended the record of successive APC administrations in the state.

Hamzat said Lagos could not afford to disregard the progress recorded since 1999, while acknowledging that there were areas where more needed to be done.

He said his experience in both the public and private sectors had given him an understanding of the challenges facing Lagos and the need to build on existing interventions.

On education, Hamzat cited improvements in the performance of Lagos students in the West African Senior School Certificate Examination (WASSCE), particularly in the proportion of students obtaining five credits including English and Mathematics.

He, however, acknowledged the need for further improvement in the sector.

Hamzat also highlighted the expansion of Lagos’ emergency response infrastructure, noting that the state had moved from having no public ambulance service in 1999 to about 200 ambulances.

He added that the capacity of the Lagos State Fire and Rescue Service had also increased from 11 trucks to 176.

On housing, Hamzat outlined plans to deepen the mortgage sector and complete ongoing housing projects, with financing arrangements that would enable residents to spread payments over longer periods.

He said Lagos also needed to develop a long-term funding mechanism capable of supporting development beyond individual political administrations.

To achieve this, Hamzat proposed the establishment of a State Wealth Fund, which he said would enable the state to plan for future generations rather than focus solely on immediate political cycles.

Waste management also featured prominently in his agenda.

Hamzat proposed expanding waste transfer stations, increasing the number of waste trucks, improving landfill operations and exploring waste-to-energy projects as part of efforts to strengthen the state’s waste management system.

He also promised to address unauthorised levies imposed on businesses and proposed the establishment of an economic council to improve coordination between the state and local governments.

According to Hamzat, the objective is to strengthen existing systems while introducing new measures capable of sustaining Lagos’ development over the long term.

His proposals form part of his agenda ahead of the 2027 Lagos State governorship election.
